What is caffeine?


Caffeine is a central nervous system tonic. Caffeine is also a psychoactive drug that is found in common food. Unlike lots of other psychoactive substances, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world.

What is caffeine found in?
Caffeine is found in lots of famous drinks including your daily coffee or tea. Also soft drinks and even dark chocolate bars, guarana, Red bull, V and some cough syrup and slimming tablets.Caffeine occurs naturally in more than 60 plants plus coffee beans, tea leaves, kola nuts used to flavour soft drinks colas, and cocoa pods used to make chocolate products.

What are effects of caffeine?
In 2014 Medical news today reported on a study suggesting that consuming three cups of coffee a day may increase the risk of liver cancer by 50%, while another study suggests that drinking four cups a day could halve the risk of mouth and throat cancer. A study from the Harvard School of Public Health proposes that drinking between two and four cups of coffee a day may reduce suicide risk in adults, while more recent research found that ingesting 200 mg of caffeine each day may boost long-term memory. Studies have also suggested that caffeine intake may protect against type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
